A Bex And A Good Lie Down

I just thought I’d write a wee blog to explain why, after nine years of hosting my own shows on Australian TV, I have decided not to present Adam Hills Tonight for ABC1 in 2014.

Basically, I need a rest. More to the point, I need a break. I fear that in trying to combine a career on UK TV as well as one in Australia, I am in danger of, to put it simply, running out of funny. I love what I do, and am very lucky to do it, but it is also important to recharge every now and then. As a comedian you can’t talk about life if you don’t have one, and at the moment my life consists of planes, trains, cars, TV studios, and stages. Like I said, I love every minute of it, but I also need some time away from it to come up with something new and funny to say.

Added to all this is the fact that my wife and I are expecting our second child any day, and I don’t want to be so busy making other people laugh that I don’t make my own daughters happy.

The mere fact that I will be the father of two girls means I will need to get back to work as soon as possible, in order to pay for whatever outrageous demands teenagers will have in 2023, so rest assured I will be banging on the ABC’s door before the end of the year with a whole laptop full of new ideas, and may even resurrect Adam Hills Tonight in 2015 if anyone will let me.

I am so grateful to the ABC, and more importantly to the viewers, for letting me have the TV career I have had thus far, and I can assure you this is not a decision I have taken lightly.

I will still be on Aussie TV screens in 2014 with The Last Leg, which Channel 4 in the UK have commissioned for at least another two series, and I am also talking to Channel 4 about some new ideas (some theirs, some mine) which may also make it back to Australia. Plus I have plans for another stand up tour in 2015, so I’m certainly still going to be knocking around.

For now though, (and I’ll be honest, I’m not even sure how many people will feel the need to read this blog) I’d like to reiterate how thankful I am for the way things panned out – from Spicks and Specks to Gordon St to AHT – and I have never taken any of it for granted.

Oh, and by the way, I am very happy that Spicks and Specks is to be regenerated. We always felt there was life in the old dog, and I wish Josh, Ella and Adam all the best for a successful run.

Again, I feel very lucky for the career I’ve had – I just don’t want to get to the end of it and wish I had taken some time to enjoy it.

That’s all for now,

Adam, I recon a lot of people will read this blog. They will miss you, as will I. But I wish you a wonderful break from the grind. Congrats on the upcoming birth of your daughter. As always, you have given me more laughs i.e. teenagers in 2023! I have to say Thank YOU. You are entitled to take time away with your family and rejuvenate. I’ll be watching out for The Last Leg in 2014 and more afterwards. May this crazy world continue to give you fodder for the funnies! Regards and best wishes, Rose

At 62 I have come to realise that family & friends are more important than material possessions, you can’t replay your life to catch up on the moments you’ve missed in your children’s lives. Enjoy them while you can, take time for yourself & your wife & good luck for the future, hope we’re not going to lose you to England.

Hey Adam, good for you for putting your little family first. the most important thing about looking back is that when you get to that “looking back” point, you are able to have the lovely “remember when the girls did ……., or remember the way their little eyes eould scunch up when they yawn”. Never apologise for wanted to be a better parent. You only get one go so you don’t wanna fuck it up.

Cheers to you for an amazing 2014.

Adam, great job opportunities will come and go but you only get one shot at being with your family. I have a lot of respect for you for having your priorities sorted. Since having kids my husband have done a constant juggling act trying to get the work/life balance right – & it has certainly involved some tough choices and sacrifices on the career front by both of us. I feel good knowing that my family is getting ‘the best of me’ – not the exhausted, stressed, cranky one they got when I was taking on too much at work. In turn, I do much better work when I am happy with how the family is travelling. Look forward to the next project Mr Hills! πŸ™‚

You will be sadly missed but at the same time I respect and admire you for making the choice to look after yourself and spend more time with your young family. They are only little for such a short time – enjoy it I say.
Sometimes it is hard to find balance and do all the things we would like to do in life, to be honest I don’t think any of us will get to do all the things we would like to if we have a vivid imagination and a willingness to dream. The beauty is that we will do more than we would have done if we hadn’t been willing to dream.
As you have been saying “Touch the frog” – don’t let other people’s expectations or your own doubts stop you from following your heart and doing amazing things. Spending time with your daughters and shaping them into the amazing people they will grow up to be is surely a “Touch the Frog” special opportunity. Grab it with both hands and celebrate the wonder, the laughter, the memories and the sleep deprivation πŸ™‚
You know we will all be here waiting for you to share your insights when you are ready to return.
Lots and lots of love, happiness and laughter

Everybody needs a break. The lure of the U.K. and all its undue attention towards colonials is hard to not lap up.The real challenge is not to become like a Cathy Lette and totally full of their own shit.Personally I can do without more shows with B-grade smiley gays and freaks with hooks for hands instead of real content.I don’t see a great difference laughing at spastics back in the day to laughing along with freaks and queers now.I see smarmy inclusion as a pathology very similar to old spiteful ridicule.Good luck.

Enjoy your time with your family Adam. I went to a conference a few years ago & they made us play a horrible grown up game, which the moral of at the end of the day – was that you can’t recoup the time you lose with your family because you work too hard. And being close to your kids as they grow up and building a wonderful relationship requires time. I promptly left the conference, went back to my room & cried my eyes out with the realisation of what I had done. I spent long hours building a business – and not with my children. Please don’t make that same mistake.

Oh Adam! Where to start…. Firstly, congratulations and good luck with the birth of your second daughter. As the oldest of two sisters, I know my dad passes on his sincerest best for your future receding hair line and his advice that a good scotch won’t stop the hormonal avalanche of 3 women in one house, but it will help. So will a dog – a male one!
Secondly, I know you’ll be back when you’re ready. So I’ll wait and enjoy the new (and endless, thankfully still hilarious no matter how many times they’re repeated, old) Spicks and Specks.
Family provides a million laughs. Pay attention, take notes and when you’re ready come back and tell us all about it. This really is about you taking time to smell the……I wanted to write roses, but all I can picture is nappies!

    Hey Adam
Congrats on the impending new arrival. I hope everything goes smoothly with the delivery and you guys are blessed with a beautiful, healthy & easy baby. I love love love watching your show/s. you and Wil Anderson are two of the funniest blokes in show biz. But you have earned and deserve a break and now is the perfect time to take it. I can’t wait to hear about life with a baby and a little one. So wishing you the best of luck and remember the best is yet to come.
As a new mum myself, I’ve found the ‘Dunstans baby language’ invaluable. YouTube it. It’s a baby talk cheat sheet. Awesome.
Also, don’t forget to get your firstborn a gift from the baby. It will help her to not feel left out with all the attention on baby and mum.
    Blessed be

It will be missed Adam but, as someone who did spend some time of my children’s early years pursuing the career as a provider, the decision is absolutely correct (regardless of the need to stay funny).

Best wishes to you and Ally as you await the arrival of your daughter.

Finally, thanks for a part you played in my life. ,My son now pays reasonable board in advance (Comedy Lounge last year). I hope you can remember why!!

Congratulations on the upcoming addition to your family. Whilst I will miss watching you as much on TV and live I agree that kids are small for such a short time you can’t afford to miss it (and I am sure your wife would love to have you around).
I love the way you make people laugh without belittling or attacking the subject of the humour!
Enjoy smelling the roses (and the baby poo and vomit) and I look forward to enjoying what brilliant ideas eventuate from your paternity leave.

    Family first.

You owe us nothing πŸ™‚ we love, envy and applaud your work, but you are human just as everyone else reading this. Well all but that super intelligent cat.

Your comedy is based on the real life aspects that most of us look past without even realising it, and to spend all your life doing his without the balance of self and family would be great for business, but bad for you overall. I doubt you’d run out of funny, but you can never ever replace the memories of your children’s early years.

We are so greatful for the work, laughter and alternative view you bring to our lives, but we appreciate your need to be a dad, husband, friend and you as an individual…

Have an awesome time off, and make the most of it πŸ™‚

We will await your return πŸ™‚

Congrats on baby no.2 btw… I hope this one doesn’t get freaked out by your loony antics and fall out the door.. My boy walked straight into a cupboard the first time I wore my new tiger onesie…

Adam, I’m sure many will read your blog as you have fans of all ages (I’m 64) who love your wry, self-effacing sense of humour, your astute observations of everyday life and your endearing ability to be funny without being smutty! I have followed and admired you since the early years, through your Comedy Festival appearances and your T.V. shows and you have always made me laugh. You will be missed, but there is NOTHING more important than family and none of us would want to see you burnt out and drained with nothing left to give ( you probably have been spreading yourself a bit thin lately!)
Thanks for the laughs and for being smart enough to recognize that you need a break. Congrats on the impending birth of daughter number two,( though with three females in the house you will be heavily outnumbered and sure to find some great new comedy material there!) Thanks for bothering to explain and not just disappearing on us,

BTW Have you thought of featuring your Barnesy Advance Australia Fair? I’m so glad it’s on Youtube but they really should consider making this the real Australian anthem. If this break means you will come back refreshed and revitalised, and are not going to ‘burn-out’, then I am all for it. So glad we got to see you in Brissie earlier this year. Can’t imagine life ‘going forward’ without my fave comedian in the whole world. All the best to you and your growing family. xxx

Very sensible, dude, and congrats on the forthcoming bairn.
We are so lucky to have you in Blighty, you’re a genuine breath of fresh air, and your show The Last Leg was unmissable viewing, I spread the word far and wide about that show and I don’t generally dig the telly! πŸ™‚ xx

It’s been a pleasure watching you on telly, but everyone has to do what’s best for their life. I lamented over the fact that you stopped making Spicks & Specks and frankly, my whole world hasn’t catastrophically imploded, so I know now, that everything will work out in the end.
I wish you and your lovely wife and daughter all the joy in the world when your newest family member joins you πŸ™‚
Enjoy your break Adam, and thank you for reminding us all that every now and then in order to be any good to anyone, we first need to take care of ourselves.

This really isn’t good enough. As a tax payer of Australia we funded the development of your career to date and just when we were starting to see some sort of pay back on our investment you have taken off to expend your Aussie tax payer funded humour on the humourless old farts in the Old Dart. This is a pitiful ROI for Australia. I found you slightly funny on Spicks. And a bit funnier on Adam Hills Tonight. I was actually looking forward to seeing if you could come up with anything decent in 2014 and all you can do is come up with the classic Australian politician excuse of ‘spending more time with family.’ Well blow that for an excuse. We know what this is really about. You are just ticked off that Tony Jones earns more than you. Well suck it up princess. Get funnier and the ABC might just pay you more.

Let’s face it Adam, you can’t have been that busy, or there would not have been #2 arriving PDQ. LOL What a great excuse for taking time off, it’s a shame comedians and opera singers don’t get paid maternity/paternity leave. My family of 5, plus my mum enjoy your shows and don’t care if it is made in Oz or UK. We own your DVDs, how about a book, but obviously not right now. Some of the other comments about your daughters providing so much material for you are correct, your first born already has some comedic talent judging by her comment about you being involved in Naked Tuesday.
All the very best for you, Ally and your little ones, have a wonderful Christmas and a great and rejuvinating 2014.

So pleased, for all three of you I don’t blame you for taking time out,who could? I can’t wait until you come back to Brit TV,your “last leg”programme during the 2012 Olympics brought it home to me about how bad my leg had become (due to accident) but that it was ok I could still lead as near normal life, and without me knowing it you,Alex and josh made the decision in February this year to have a BKA a lot easier than the last two years, for which I thank you all for.
Good luck with everything and hope it all goes smoothly.

Adam, after seeing you live for the first time last month and watching your travels on facebook…I am wondering if your family really know who you are with a TV career! ;o) Your family comes first and anyone who needs to see you in 2014 can watch your DVD’s :oD We don’t get Adam Hills Tonight in the UK but I am sure it will be a great loss to Aussie TV but one that must happen. All the best with your family and I will be looking forward to the next time you are over here! Take care :o)

You bring a brilliant a quality to all our work that’s filled with generous, thoughtful humanness. You also seamlessly combine intelligence, integrity and silliness. For example, on ABC 30/12/14 show, Gloria Steinem on ‘Frank Zappa, back Rolls Royce and the boyfriend with crabs’, Stephen Fry in support of Gay marriage event and the contest who saw a young man crawl like a lizard to win. All the best on the new edition to Team Hills!! Look forward to your social reforms and comedy 2015 and beyond
